Kdenlive Video editor Review 2019
Kdenlive Video editor is the most popular opensource video editor on Linux. It is completely free and available to download to all platform Linux, Windows and MacOS. Kdenlive is the part of the KDE Application. It is built using KDE framework and other libraries and framework such as feri0r, LADSPA, FFmpeg etc. There are few opensource video editor Kdenlive, Shotcut, openshot, pitivi, flowblade etc. and Kdenlive is the best of among those. Look top best free & opensource video editor from my previous blog post. Kdenlive is not only solution for linux but also for Windows and MacOS for video editing. Kdenlive is absolutely great for learning video editing. Although, Kdenlive is not fully finished and polished product, good for average video editing but not for professional purpose. Once its UI polished to make more user friendly and added keyframe feature to all effects with the same UI then it will be great experience on video editing specially on Linux. It has lots of audio video effect collections, wipe transitions(lumas), editing tools and features which makes Kdenlive looks like professional video editor.
The following are the pros and cons of Kdenlive.
Pros of Kdenlive :
- support large number of media format.
- large collection of video and audio effect library.
- Support grouping and un-grouping clips.
- Support Marker feature for editing.
- Project zone selection in Timeline.
- Keyframmable parameter for audio and video effect.
- provide all video scopes(waveform, histogram, vectorscope and RGB parade) for color grading.
- Lightweight, simple and easy to use interface.
- Support configurable shortcut and User Interface (UI).
Cons of Kdenlive:
- Not Stable, crash frequently.
- Keyframe feature and its UI is not standard and consistence.
- not suitable for advanced and professional video editing.
- Much more audio video effect (filters) may lead confusion because of repeating filters(eg. brightness, brightness Keyframmable etc.).
Conclusion :
Kdenlive is a professional looking video editor that has large collection of audio and video filters and many of them are keyframmable. And it has almost all basic editing features. Although, it is not stable, keyframe feature is not user friendly. If you are looking for best opensource video editing Kdenlive is the best comparing to other great opensource video editor Shotcut and Openshot. And it is good for beigneer to learn video editing and easy to switch other professional advanced video editor.

Shotcut is a free, open source, cross-platform video editor (avilable for Linux, Windows and MacOS). If you looking for free and opensource video editing software Shotcut is absolutely best for those who want to learn video editing by step to step. So, it may be learning curve for beginner. If you learn video editing form Shotcut then it will be useful in order to switch other advanced professional video editing applications such as Adobe premium pro, After effect, DavinchiResolve, Hitfilm, finalcut etc. Because Shotcut' UI, Process and editing techniques are similar to standard and common NLE video editing. But, if you are using other fancy video editing like Filmora to learn video editing, you can make nice fancy style video quickly but you can not really learn editing techniques because you don't know how to animation keyframe works, how to make your custom lower third and titles, how transition works and many more. So, here my suggestion, use those fancy linear video editing for quick and nice looking video quickly (e.g. vloge video etc) but if you really want to learn video editing, you can start form simple VES like Shotcut. Shotcut will make foundation for you. I'm usin Shotcut since 2015 and I learnt so many editing techniques and still learning and testing new features that Shotcut provide monthly with update. Shotcut is not fully complete and feature full VES (see Shotcut Roadmap to find missing features that Shotcut team going to add in future.
Shotcut pros
- Support 4K editing.
- support large number of media format.
- Slik, intuitive, dockable and easy to use interface.
- Free, opensource and available for all platform (linux, MacOS and Windows).
- support simple and advance keyframe(discrete, linear and smooth) with curve based UI.
- 50+ video filters and 20+audio filters including Mask, Chromakey, color grading, Text etc.
- Webvfx and HTML Overlay support which is unique and new to video editing world.
- Native editing support. It means you don't have to import media to the timeline and also support batch exporting.
- Great user forum and monthly update Shotcut version.
- Audio and video scopes (loudness, audio peak meter, audio spectrum, audio waveform, video waveform, histogram etc.
- Ohters: Grid and safe areas overlay, speed, reverse, trim clip, auto save exist etc.
Shotcut cons
- Shotcut is frequently crash which is really annoying while doing projects.
- Lack of video filters such as Rotoscroping, histogram, disort effects, drop shadow effects etc.
- Lack of editing features such as markers, group un-group clips, multiple selections, tracking objects etc and video scope (Vectorscope, RGB parade etc.)
- Not suitable for color grading
- Not capable for advanced professional video editing.
Shotcut missing features are in Shotcut Roadmap.
There are so many video editor software available including freeware and commercial. Each of them are different form one to another because of different rendering engine they use, user interface (UI), editing techniques, process, function and features. Shotcut has also some best features and tools and techniques. Some of them are listed below:
- Grid views and safe area overlay option in player
- Native editing: it means you don't have to import media to timeline for basic editing
- Webvfx HTML overlay support
- Audio scopes: loudness, peak meter, waveform, spectrum analyzer
- Wide media format support
- Support for 4K resolutions
It is in active development process in spite of few active contributers. Every month, new version of Shotcut is released with bug fixes, improvement, and new features added. Shotcut is not ready for professional video editing purpose. So, Shotcut can not be compare with other professional commercial and closed source video editing software such as Davinchi Resolve, Adobe premium pro, Hitfilm, final cut etc. because Shotcut is a freeware and opensource, few developer are contributing actively with little financial support form donation and ads of their website and forum. So, we don't have to expect much however comparing with Kdenlive(another great opensource and free video editor), Shotcut has some missing features. They are :
- Marker
- Proxy editing
- RGB Parade and Vector Scope video scope
- Group un-Group features
- Multiple Clip selection
- blend mode for each video in timeline
- Video effects: Rotoscroping, disort effect, flip, drop shadow, curve etc.
